Roma new manager Daniele De Rossi may be out to nail a permanent spot as Roma manager following his brilliant start to life with the Giallarossi's interim boss.
The former Roma player turned manager got off to a winning start with Roma as he oversaw a 2-1 victory over Hellas Verona at Estadio Olimpico.
It was a tough and tricky clash for the home side against the spirited Hellas Verona side. De Rossi provided the spark for a new beginning for Roma after the deadlock with Jose Mourinho.
Roma raced into the lead in just 19 minutes. Stephan El Shaarawy assisted Romelu Lukaku to score his 15th goal of the season as he rifled home the first goal for the home side.
El Shaarawy was again crucial for the second goal for Roma just six minutes after Lukaku's strike. The prolific winger assisted Pellegrini to smash home Roma's second to double the lead.
After going two goals up, Roma conceded a ludicrous penalty after Diego Llorente had his arms on the ball from an unnatural position.
Verona had a route to fight their way back into the game with the awarded spot-kick but Milan Duric wasted it as he fired over the crossbar.
With Roma still leading 2-0, Hellas Verona finally got their way back into the game in the 76th minute. Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio committed a heinous blunder, allowing Folorunsho's strike from outside the box to slip through his grasp into the net.
With the deficit halved, Roma were in for a nervy finish in the last 15 minutes but they held on to secure a 2-1 win at the blast of the final whistle much to the relief of Daniele De Rossi.
Speaking after the game, Daniele De Rossi lauded the team for their show of determination to bring home the result.
“We must celebrate victories and recreate enthusiasm here, so even though the team did not play very well in the final 25 minutes, they showed heart, and determination and brought home the result," he said.
De Rossi was appointed Roma interim manager until the end of the season. However, he could be asked to continue on a permanent basis should he improve on his shift on the dugout, as per club sources.
Following the win, Roma have moved one place up on the Serie A table to 8th. De Rossi will hope to continue on his winning start as they travel to take on Salernitana in their next game on Monday, January 29, 2024.
