Death Toll rises to 53 in Maui wildfire
The total death toll in the Maui wildfire has risen to 53 people. A wildfire has been raging Maui, Hawaii and this has led to loss of many lives. The death toll keeps rising and has now been confirmed by some officials yesterday, Thursday to be at 53 people.
The wildfire led to serious destruction of properties, especially in Lahaina which is a town in the region. Reports revealed everything in that part of town has been destroyed. More than a 1000 structures and buildings have been razed down by fire.
They have been able to contain 80% of the wildfire that spread in Lahaina. Firefighters have been despatched to those areas trying to contain the spread of the fire.
Many residents of Maui are without power in their areas while thousands of people have become displaced from their homes. Those who survived this incident are left homeless with only the clothes on their backs. So many businesses and shops have also been ruined.
The police chief in Maui has directed families who are still searching for their missing loved ones to a family assistance center.
The commander General of the Hawaiian army, Maj.Gen Kenneth Hara has revealed that the cause of the fire is still unknown but could have been ignited by the dry conditions in the state.
The Governor of Hawaii, Gov. Josh Green has spoken on this incident. He revealed that this incident will cost billions of dollars and also take many years to rebuild
He shared that it may take some time to get to know the full extent of the fire and damages but he knows it will run into billions of dollars. He says all of those buildings are going to have to be rebuilt and this will birth a new town of Lahaina.
He shared that they are presently focused on the lives that were lost in the incident. He revealed how saddening it was
He also revealed that Thousands of people in Hawaii who have been displaced will need to be housed after this incident which destroyed the houses of many.
He was speaking at a news conference yesterday, Thursday when he shared all this. He said the state is seeking about 2,000 rooms to accommodate people. He says they will be reaching out to all hotels in the community. He also pleaded with residents who were affected and have extra rooms in their homes to offer to the needy.
