Death toll rises up to 15 in Senegal protests
The number of total deaths have risen to 15 in the ongoing Senegal protests.
There have been clashes and protests in Senegal ever since the court convicted an opposition leader Ousmane Sonko to jail.
A court in Senegal has sentenced this man who is a leading opposition figure to two years in prison. The sentence came on Thursday and they had found him guilty of corrupting youth which prompted protests and clashes in the country
Ousmane Sonko is a leading figure in Senegal and a strong rival to the president.
The sentences will therefore ban him from running in future elections.
This has now caused a serious case of protests in the city which has led to deaths.
There are now violent clashes and disturbances in Dakar which is the capital.
The minister of the interior, Antoine Diome revealed that since the protest began, about 500 arrests have been made.
He revealed that the government even suspects that there is involvement from overseas which means foreign involvement.
Recall Sonko, was originally charged with rape but then he was convicted of corruptible people morally on Thursday.
He was then sentenced to two years in prison.
He said he believes this is an act to tamper with his political career when the presidential election is just around the corner in 2024 (next year).
The protests and clashes are between the police and supporters of Sonko.
This had led to deaths and destruction of properties.
The police revealed the supporters of Sonko are making attempts to destabilize the country.
