Designer of Nigerian Flag, Taiwo Akinkunmi passes away at 87 years

Taiwo Akinkunmi who designed the Nigerian flag has passed away. He passed away recently at the age of 87 years old. His full name is Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi and he was a civil servant who was known popularly as the designer of the Nigerian Flag. He began his career as a civil servant at the Secretariat in Ibadan.

He was born on the 10th of May 1936 and died on the 29th of August 2023. He was a student at the time when he designed the Nigerian flag and this was in 1959. He had entered a competition for the best Nigerian flag design and he won.

He passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, August 29 and this was after a brief illness. It was one of his children who announced the news of his death on Facebook.
He wrote: “Life is indeed transient; I can say boldly that you lived a life with a landmark. Continue to rest, my father! Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R.): A great man has gone"

The flag Taiwo Akinkunmi had designed was officially hoisted on Independence Day, October 1, 1960. He had been awarded 100 pounds as the winner when his flag design was picked.
