A lot of people are guilty of buying skin care products without bothering to check the list of chemicals contained in them, and this is not so good. Quick question; what guides you in making any decision to get a particular product for your skin? Well, we all have certain parameters, but we must note that it is very important we look out for some key ingredients in the process of buying our skin care products. More than anything, the presence of these ingredients in the beauty cosmetics we use can mar our skin to a great extent, and it might take a while for the skin to be restored. What’s worse? They can be found in our normal daily routine of taking care of our skin which involves our face washes, lotion, sunscreen, body spray, etc. and it might prove a little difficult to follow up closely on all the skincare/cosmetic products we have… but in the long run, you’d value this action. so, here are some names you should take off your cosmetic list.

ALUMINUM
(mostly present in many foundations, bronzers, deodorants, shampoos, and face powders)
This is a common ingredient that can be found in face powders, foundations, bronzers, shampoos, and deodorants. Although, it has been declared toxic by some, and non-toxic by others. The fact remains that the presence of aluminum in a large amount can lead to symptoms such as; seizures, deformity, weakness, and slow growth in children and this is not all. In the long run, this can also lead to cancer, nervous disorders, reproductive problems, and bone diseases.

HYDROQUINONE (mostly present in skin lightening products)
The presence of this chemical in a beauty product can greatly affect the skin and in turn cause ‘’ochronosis’’—which is a disease with obvious symptoms such as disfiguration of the skin, and the appearance of blue-black lesions on exposed skin. Scary, right? This is one substance you should erase from your beauty routine

FRAGRANCE (mostly present in deodorant, skin toner, facial cream, serums, sunscreen)
The toxic nature of this product lies in the mystery behind its name. As a result of trade secrets, manufacturers do not list the chemicals behind the term ‘’fragrance’’. So, for all we know, this could include a lot of substances with the inclusion of synthetic petrochemicals, and this is highly harmful to the skin as a whole. Also, many of these ingredients can lead to allergies, cancer, birth defects, and even problems with the nervous system. Imagine all the toxic substances hidden in that word!

MAGNESIUM STEARATE (mostly present in face powders, lipsticks, eyeliner, mascara)
This is a substance created from stearic acid and added magnesium ions. Now, the human body as a whole does not recognize synthetic ingredients and this can lead to increasing health issues when digested or topically used. So when next you’re opting for a beauty product, make sure to look out for this substance.

PHTHALATES
In the world today, breast cancer and liver diseases have been linked to being of the leading causes of death. This is a result of the many chemicals the human body is exposed to which can be dangerous to our overall wellbeing. Phthalate is one ingredient responsible for all of these diseases. It is found in many beauty products in the world. However, you must run away from any products with these harmful ingredients. It can lead to several health complications which may ultimately lead to a lifelong sickness and eventually death. So, try to avoid buying skin care products with this particular ingredient.

PARAFFIN OIL (mostly present in lotions)
Have you realized how often your breakouts occur when you use certain essential skincare products? Well, you have your answer now. Popularly known as petroleum jelly or mineral oil, Paraffin oil is commonly found in several beauty products. This substance should be avoided as it can be polluted with metals and other toxic substances which have been known to cause cancer. It is ‘’comedogenic’’ in nature which means it clogs and enlarges pores, eventually leading to breakouts. It is one of the most popular ingredients that can be found in many skin care products today. As harmless as it sounds, this ingredient should be constantly avoided to help your skin presently, and to also avoid future skin complications.

PETROLEUM
This is one ingredient that should not be seen in any beauty product or substance used in the body. Petroleum goes through a lot of harsh processes before it is ready to be used in automobiles. Now, take a minute to think about the damage this can cause to your skin. Asides from the fact that petroleum is an extremely harsh chemical, it can also cause diseases like cancer, contact dermatitis, and other skin complications when applied to the skin. This is a result of how delicate the human skin is, and how much care is needed to take care of skin.

So, take a moment to access your beauty products when next you plan on purchasing them and look out for these key ingredients. By doing this, you would be saving your skin a lot of future damage which can in turn make your skin healthier and less prone to skin diseases. Remember, prevention is a lot better than cure. Having healthy skin may be a lot of work in the long run, but when a constant and conscious effort is made, it would be worth the while.
