Doctors give FG two weeks strike notice

THE Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) have given the Federal government a 2 weeks strike notice.

They gave the FG 2 weeks to do something about the issues which they have on ground.

Recall that NARD went on strike for many weeks in 2021 and this was after the government didn't meet their demands.

The NARD held a National Executive Council meeting on Saturday, which was the 29th of April. The meeting was held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

It was after this meeting that they gave the FG this warning which was issued in a communique.

It was the president of the association, Orji Innocent and the secretary-general, Chikezie Kelechi, who signed the communique that was released.

They condemned the “obnoxious bill” that was sponsored by Ganiyu Johnson who is a member of the House of Representatives. This bill was seeking to restrict the freedom of the members of the association. NARD said that this bill would eventually increase the problems of the health sector.

The communique mentioned that the NARD had severally engaged the government to review the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) which is squally due for review after 5 years but the last time this was reviewed was 10 years ago.
They said the government hasn't addressed this issue.
They also mentioned that they have issued ultimatums to the government over the matter of reviewing this salary structure

NEC recalled that there have been previous ultimatums issued to the government by NARD on account of this problem of reviewing the CONMESS salary structure which was last reviewed after its implementation in 2014.

They also addressed how the government had refused to pay previous salaries of 2014/2015 and 2016 to the members.

They said the government has also still refused to provide to the health sector, at least, 15% budgetary allocation as should have been since a declaration for health care financing was made in 2001.

The NARD has then demanded that there must be an increment in the CONMESS salary structure to 200% of the current salary for doctors immediately.

They also called for the bill to be suspended so as to avoid more doctors migrating abroad.

They have then given the FG an ultimatum of 2 weeks which begins on the 29th of April to address all of the demands they have made.

They said if it isn't addressed, 'they may not be able industrial harmony in the sector nationwide'.
