Eddie Howe felt gutted by the refereeing decision which affected Newcastle United's 4-2 defeat to Liverpool on January 1, 2024.
Liverpool were handed two penalties during the encounter, with the first being missed by Mohamed Salah, while the Egyptian tucked away the second.
Newcastle United were poor on the day, with the Reds putting on an amazing showing at Anfield.
Howe felt that the two penalties handed to Liverpool in the game had an effect on his side losing the encounter.
He claimed that an incident in the first 45, where Sean Longstaff could have won a penalty, but wasn't given, was the clearest penalty in the game.
Eddie Howe also admitted that he could understand why the first penalty was given, however, “the contact was so minimal”.
Speaking regarding the penalty calls in the game, Howe said: “I think Martin has pulled his hands away, he’s taken two steps before he’s gone down so for me it’s not a penalty. Sean Longstaff’s one was, just before that incident.
“Even the first one I can see why it’s given but the contact was so minimal so we feel hard done by on those decisions.”
Liverpool went ahead in the 49th minute with Mohamed Salah scoring, before Alexander Isak equalized 6 minutes later.
Curtis Jones' tap-in from close range took Liverpool in front in the 74th minute, while Cody Gakpo powered in the Red's third goal of the evening.
In the 81st minute, Sven Botman netted the 2nd for Newcastle United, and it looked like they could smell a fighting chance at coming back.
However, the biggest and contentious call of the night came in the 84th minute, with Martin Dubravka handed a yellow for a foul on Diogo Jota.
4 minutes before the expiration of the game, Mohamed Salah thundered home the penalty, confirming the victory for the rampaging Liverpool side.
The Reds commence the year in the number one spot, with 45 points from 20 matches and they are aiming to snatch the title away from Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United have been poor this campaign, as they sit 9th on the table with 29 points from 20 matches.
Eddie Howe can attribute his side's poor form to the injury issues his team has faced this campaign, with many first-team stars unavailable for action in many parts this season.
First-team goalie Nick Pope is currently injured, with Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett, Joseph Willock, Callum Wilson, and Harvey Barnes amongst others all unavailable due to injury.
They largely have to improve from their form on Monday, January 1, 2023, as they could have lost hugely to Liverpool if things had really gone south.
Liverpool had total shots of 34, with 15 of those shots being on target. The Reds also had an expected goals rate of 7.11.
Anyway, Newcastle United return to action on Saturday, January 6, 2023, facing Sunderland in a 3rd-round FA Cup encounter.
