Erik Ten Hag has explained the reason why the treatment of Marcus Rashford with regard to indiscipline was different from that of Jadon Sancho.
Ten Hag had a rift with Sancho for months following the attacker's statement terming the Dutchman “a liar”.
Jadon Sancho's now-deleted statement on X came after a presser where Erik Ten Hag revealed the reason for excluding the Englishman from the squad that lost 3-1 to Arsenal on September 3, 2023.
The former Ajax boss stated that Sancho didn't make the Matchday squad due to his performances in training and that apparently infuriated the forward.
Following the statement by Jadon Sancho, Manchester United put out a statement revealing that the on-loan Borussia Dortmund man has been ostracized from the first team.
A statement shared by the Red Devils on their official website reads: “Jadon Sancho will remain on a personal training program away from the first-team group, pending resolution of a squad discipline issue.”
Reports indicated that Sancho could have been reinstated back to the first team if he had apologized to Erik Ten Hag, however, he remained adamant and unready to change his stance.
Fast-forward months later to Marcus Rashford, the England international was recently in the news for partying in a nightclub in Belfast until 3:00 AM and that resulted in him missing training the following day.
Days after the incident occurred, Manchester United swiftly dealt with the situation as an internal matter, even offering to provide counseling for Rashford if he needs one.
Manchester United also made it known that the midfielder has acknowledged responsibility for his actions and as such the case is now resolved.
The Premier League giants wrote: “Marcus has taken responsibility for his actions.
“This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed”.
Marcus Rashford has also been brought back into the fold and he is available for selection in their coming game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
Speaking concerning the disparity between the situation of Rashford and Ten Hag, Erik Ten Hag expressed that both issues could have been sorted internally but Jadon Sancho opted to go public.
He said: “We can sort out everything internally. Jadon chose to go public.”
The 53-year-old tactician also reiterated what is expected from players at such a gigantic club.
He said: “Here we are at Man United, I don’t have to educate players. At Man United you have to manage yourself”.
“The player has to know what is good and not good. When you want to play top football, it demands a certain way of life. Always”.
Manchester United sit 9th on the Premier League table, with 32 points from 21 league matches.
