Erling Haaland has fluffed his lines on many occasions this campaign, a trend that has become shocking to many, given the Norwegian's lethal nature in front of goal.

Haaland has missed more big opportunities than any other player in the English Premier League this season, despite being renowned for his devilish nature in front of goal by burying chances with reckless abandon.

The former Borussia Dortmund man has missed a staggering 26 big chances this term, averaging out above one big opportunity thrown away each game

Haaland leads this list filled with players who are known for missing great chances when the need arises.

Chelsea and Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson, whose performance has displeased Blues supporters many times this term, has thrown away 15 massive opportunities this season - 11 less than Erling Haaland.

Jackson has failed to perform up to the lofty expectations placed on his shoulders this season, and he got under the skin of some Chelsea faithful after failing to put the ball into the net after rounding Brentford's keeper Flekken during their 2-2 draw at the GTech Community Stadium.

Darwin Nunez, who has come under the spotlight for missing clear-cut opportunities, has also missed five fewer big chances than Haaland this season, despite playing three more games than the Norwegian poacher.

Erling Haaland looked perplexed during the Manchester Derby on Sunday, March 3, 2024, when he failed to convert some golden opportunities that came his way - including missing an open goal.

Anyway, the 23-year-old did score late on in the game, pouncing on an error from Sofyan Amrabat and taking full advantage of Manchester United's lapses to hand the Cityzens a 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.

It can be said though, that players who put themselves in goal-scoring positions are more prone to missing big opportunities when they come their way.

This often indicates why strikers have poor numbers, with regards to their conversion rate from the opportunities they are given.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins is the second top scorer in the Premier League this campaign, with 16 goals in 27 appearances for the Villains.

However, even though his numbers are brilliant, Watkins has wasted the third most glorious opportunities in the league, having squandered 18 clear-cut chances this season.

Newcastle's Alexander Isak, Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund and Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin have all also thrown away 12 massive chances this term.

Bournemouth's goal machine Dominic Solanke has also scuppered 10 great opportunities.

Erling Haaland's high-volume opportunities are actually the reason he is such a potent forward.

Despite missing several big chances, his ability to pump needed goals for Manchester City on many occasions throughout the season is what makes him a goal machine.

Pep Guardiola has even stated previously that he is not bothered if Haaland misses opportunities, as long as the ex-Red Bull Salzburg man can put it behind him and continue to take several bites at the cherry.

When questioned concerning, Erling Haaland's scuppered chances on Sunday, March 3, 2024, Guardiola said:

“He was disappointed, I was disappointed. I want him to score four or five goals every game like he did at Luton, but I don't care.

“The great players I met and was a manager for have this incredible ability to forget in an instant.

“He can miss this one and be sad for 10 seconds and miss five more and be sad for 10 seconds more. But after that, erase it and onto the next one.

The Spanish tactician noted that it is painful to miss great chances, but he urged players to be positive by shaking it off and still pressing on.

Pep Guardiola said: “It's painful - it has to be - but they forget it as quick as possible. Everyone misses but when they miss, smile, be positive, and go for the next. That defines the great players and he did it.”
