Everton have moved out of the relegation zone in the Premier League table after winning their appeal against a point deduction by the Premier League.
On November 17, 2023, an independent commission slammed the Merseyside club with a 10-point deduction for breaching Premier League Profitablity and Sustainability Rule, PSR.
The PSR prohibits English clubs from registering losses in three successive seasons above a fixed threshold.
Everton allegedly breached PSR provisions by registering losses that exceeded the fixed threshold by £19.8m from 2018/19 season. As a result, they were hit with a 10-point deduction which saw the club drop into the relegation zone.
In February, Everton appealed the point deduction and have successfully won the appeal, as per BBC.
The point deduction has not been lifted but has been reduced to just six points. This means, the Toffees, who were teetering on the drop zone, have now climbed up from 17th on the Premier League table to 15th with 25 points.
decided to appeal the decision at the start of February.
Reacting to the point restoration of four points by the Appeal Board, Everton maintained they have been vindicated despite still having 6 points retained.
“The club is also particularly pleased with the Appeal Board’s decision to overturn the original Commission’s finding that the club failed to act in utmost good faith.
“That decision, along with reducing the points deduction, was an incredibly important point of principle for the club on appeal. The Club, therefore, feels vindicated in pursuing its appeal,” the club's statement read in part.
