Nottingham Forest and head coach Steven Reid have been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for confronting referee Paul Tierney after their defeat to Liverpool last Saturday, March 2.
The FA charged Forest for failing to ensure their players and technical staff behaved properly following their 1-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp's team.
The controversy stemmed from Darwin Nunez's 99th-minute winning goal, which came after referee Tierney mistakenly restarted play with a drop ball to Liverpool instead of awarding possession to Forest.
The decision to give possession back to Liverpool following a head injury to defender Ibrahima Konate left Forest furious, as they had control of the ball outside the penalty area when play was stopped.
Meanwhile, Mark Clattenburg, Forest's referee analyst, criticized the post-game decision on BBC Radio 5 Live.
According to Clattenburg, since the referee decided to stop the game, he should have returned the ball to the team in possession, which was Forest but the referee acted otherwise.
After the match, enraged members of Forest's coaching staff surrounded referee Tierney to vent their disapproval of the outrageous decision.
The Sun reported that the club owner, Evangelos Marinakis, even took to the pitch and followed Tierney down the tunnel after the final whistle.
As a result, Forest have now been charged with allegedly failing to ensure that their players and technical staff behaved appropriately after the final whistle.
An FA spokesperson said Forest have been charged with allegedly failing "to ensure its players and/or technical area occupants don't behave improperly after the final whistle."
Additionally, the club's manager Steven Reid also received charges for allegedly using abusive and/or insulting language towards Tierney during the contentious encounter as the official left the pitch.
After being sent off, Reid allegedly acted improperly and used abusive language towards a match official, according to the FA statement.
The FA statement reads: "First team coach Steven Reid has been charged with allegedly using abusive and/or insulting language."
As it stands, Reid and Nottingham Forest have until Wednesday, March 13 to respond to these charges.
Meanwhile, Referee Tierney was also punished for his incorrect decision to give the ball to Liverpool before Nunez's goal.
Tierney has been removed from Premier League fixtures this weekend but he will still serve as VAR for Arsenal's match against Brentford on Saturday instead.
Forest captain Ryan Yates disclosed that the referee's erroneous decision was intentional because despite explaining the rule to Tierney, he insisted that he was correct in the situation.
Nottingham Forest will take on Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday, March 10.
The focus may be on the FA charges, but Forest are expected to channel their energy and put their best foot forward on the field to win the match as they near the relegation zone.
