Fire breaks out at National assembly

The national assembly building in the federal capital territory (FCT) was gutted by fire on the 11th of August.

Several documents and office equipment were destroyed following a fire outbreak at the new wing of the National Assembly on Thursday evening.

At about 6pm on Thursday, passers-by who noticed smoke coming out from a store on the second floor of the New Building, House of Reps Wing of the Complex, raised the alarm.
The wing houses lawmakers’ offices, committee rooms, banks and other private concerns.
The Office of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and principal officers are on the fourth floor.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Information of the National Assembly, Emmanuel Agada, on Thursday, the fire started on the second floor in room 227 at the new wing of the House of Representatives around 6 p.m. but was contained in the room.
It was gathered that the fire destroyed several documents and office equipment.

He said the fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault, adding that the fire was immediately contained and did not extend beyond the affected office.

Accordingly, the fire was put out with the assistance of staff on duty who immediately broke into the affected office and effectively deployed stationed fire extinguishers on the floor before the arrival of the fire service officer.

“Consequently, the combined prompt efforts curtailed the fire to the affected office only, and power supply to the wing was put off to enable a full assessment and investigations into the incident.

The National Assembly Complex is currently undergoing a major renovation, particularly the White House, which houses the Senate and the House of Representatives chambers and some offices.

Although the lawmakers are currently on annual recess until September, some committees are still carrying out investigative hearings. It is unclear how this fire outbreak will affect those committees
