Fire destroys about 150 shops in Zaria market
A fire outbreak has destroyed 150 shops in Zaria market. The market, Yan Katako is located in Sabon Gari, Zaria which is in Kaduna State.
The fire started around 1am on Wednesday and lasted for a very long time which spanned into the afternoon.
Mr Hamisu Buhari who is the Chief Security Officer of the market, mentioned that the fire broke out when power was restored and an electric pole fell on one of the shops.
The electricity distribution company in Kaduna State had restored the power when the pole fell.
He also said that they weren't able to reach the fire service agencies so he had to go to the fire service office personally but they informed him that their operational vehicle was not in good condition.
He then contacted the fire service in Sabon Gari Main Market but they asked him to provide fuel for them, and he did this before they came.
The chairman of Timber dealers in this same market also spoke on the incident. He is Alhaji Alin Ashiru. He mentioned ghat 150 ships had been razed by the fire and burnt to ashes resulting in the loss of goods worth millions of naira.
However Abdul Azeez Abdullahi who is the Head of Corporate Affairs, KEDCO, has denied that it was an electricity spark that started the fire. He claims that the reports he received says that the fire started from one shop and eventually spread to other shops.
