Fire engulfs parts of Balogun Market

Fire at Balogun market yesterday destroyed some buildings in Balogun market. The traders were seen counting their losses as this fire engulfed their shops with goods worth millions of naira.

The fire broke out on 32, Balogun Street and 34, Gbajumo Street of the market and affected three buildings. The fire destroyed the topmost part of a story building in Balogun market.

The fire was said to have started around 9am yesterday morning.

There was quite a commotion and people ran around trying to put out the fire and salvage whatever they could

People couldn't explain the cause of the fire and no one knows what started it. Many Traders and shop owners were seen lamenting as their shops had been burnt and goods destroyed.

We learn there are about 900 so in the building but about 580 shops were affected.

According to a trader, when the fire service came, their vehicle was unable to drive and access the buildings that were engulfed by fire because of the makeshift shops around the building.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu who is the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASEMA) spoke concerning this and mentioned that when the fire service arrived, they saw the building on fire.

They said after investigation realized the fire began from the 3rd floor but they were able to intervene and stop the fire from spreading to the other adjoining buildings.

The news of fires at markets in Nigeria is fast becoming a serous issue as this is not the first, second nor third this year.
