Mikel Obi, a former captain of the Super Eagles, believes the Back2Base talent hunt, which takes place from June 9 to 11 at the University of Lagos Sports Centre in Yaba, is not just for footballers.
Mikel said this during a press conference in Lagos to announce the three-day event, adding that young basketball players and tennis stars would also have an opportunity to showcase their talents.
"It's an opportunity for us to give back to the community; first and foremost, we must recognize that there are so many talents waiting to be recognized in this country," the 35-year-old stated.
With the Back2Base project, we hope to assist in the promotion of these talents. The initial edition will begin in Lagos, but we intend to take it across the country afterwards. It'll be a thrilling time for the kids, not only in football, but also in basketball and tennis.
Mikel stated that as a Youth Ambassador, it was his responsibility to provide opportunities for the youth that would bring smiles to not just their faces but also their parents faces.
This means a lot to me since I remember being a kid in Jos and being fortunate enough to be recognized.
Our goal is not only to send the talents we identify abroad, but also to see how they might be put to good use right here at home.
