What happened?

A Spanish judge announced on Tuesday, November 14, that Dani Alves will be facing trial for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona last year.

The incident took place at a nightclub called Sutton, where the victim claims Alves forced himself on her in a bathroom.

Reports have it that Alves turned himself in for arrest several weeks after the alleged assault took place.

It should be noted that the Barcelona court has yet to set a date for the hearings.

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old former Barcelona defender has been in pre-trial jail since January after being arrested for the alleged assault on December 30.

The judge denied him bail, citing Alves as a flight risk.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Alves provided four different versions of events when questioned by the police, according to reports.

In August, he was indicted by an investigative judge, and the court in Barcelona has decided to move forward with the case.

According to Sport, the defense lawyers have been given five days to prepare their arguments before the trial, where Alves could potentially face a prison sentence of 4 to 12 years and be ordered to pay damages of €150k.

The court document, signed by three judges, stated that the alleged victim's statements, witness testimonies, and expert reports are deemed sufficient, though the outcome will be determined after the plenary phase.

The Spanish court announced in an eight-page document, that there were sufficient grounds for the 40-year-old to stand trial, following requests by the public prosecutor and the woman’s lawyer.

The document read: "The statements of the alleged victim and the witness's statements and experts' reports that appear in the case must be considered as sufficient for this purpose, without prejudice to the outcome following the plenary phase."

The former Barcelona defender, Dani Alves, has denied the allegations and claims the sexual encounter was consensual.

Alves, who had a successful career with Barcelona and the Brazilian national team, won a total of 42 soccer titles, including three Champions Leagues and two Copa Americas.

The former Sevilla defender was also part of Brazil's 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar.

Following his sexual assault in January, Pumas UNAM, the Mexican club where he last played, terminated the Brazilian's contract.
