Four players of Velez Sarsfield were detained on Monday, March 18, 2024, following an investigation into allegations that they raped a woman in a hotel room in March 2024, according to the plaintiff's lawyer.

These players include; Uruguayan Sebastian Sosa, Paraguay’s Jose Florentin, and Argentines Braian Cufre and Abiel Osorio.

Based on an order, they were held for 48 hours until a judge decided if they should remain under arrest pending investigation.

The order to detain these four footballers came following a request by prosecutor, Eugenia Maria Posse, after a three-hour interview with the alleged victim.

In a statement broadcast on Television, the accuser's lawyer, Patricia Neme, said there were enough “elements to request pre-trial detention” as the four have sufficient channels to flee if they intended to avoid trial.

A sports journalist said to be 24 years old claimed she was invited by Sosa to a hotel room in Tucuman, Argentina, where the other three were also waiting.

The lady said she felt dizzy following a few drinks and she proceeded to lay down on a bed before she was then raped by the footballers.

Velez Sarsfield, a club from Buenos Aires in Argentina, shared in a statement on Monday, March 18, 2024, that they have suspended the four players and ordered the commencement of an internal investigation.

Velez Sarsfield wrote: “By virtue of the publicly known facts involving the footballers of the Institution's professional squad Sebastián Sosa, José Florentin, Braian Cufré, and Abiel Osorio, the Club communicates that on the date of this date the suspension of the employment contract of the four players.”

They added: “At the same time, the start of an internal summary was ordered so that, as soon as possible, the definitive measures to be taken with respect to the four players can be determined.”

Velez Sarsfield also expressed its concern about the reported event and stressed it is against their principles and values.

The Argentine club wrote: “The club reiterates its deepest concern about the reported events, which are clearly contrary to the principles and values of our institution.”

Reports indicate that a judge will decide on Wednesday whether to extend the players' detention and the next line of action in the matter.

Velez Sarsfield sit 2nd in Group A of the Copa de la Liga Professional, with 21 points from 11 matches and they are level on points with league-leaders River Plate, who have also amassed 21 points from 11 matches.

The Liga Professional is yet to commence, with matches expected to begin in full swing from Sunday, May 12, 2024.

Velez Sarsfield finished 25th on the log last campaign, with 27 points from 27 league matches and they will be looking to improve their fortunes this season.

They are 11-time winners of the Argentine top-flight league, and they have also won the Copa Libertadores on 1 occasion.

Velez Sarsfield return to action on March 31, 2024, facing Talleres in a Copa De La Liga Profesional action.
