Chelsea's former coach Frank Lampard might take over Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC.
Lampard, who last functioned as an interim coach of Chelsea, is now in the hunt alongside former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, to secure the vacant managerial job.
After sacking former boss Christian Lattanizo, Charlotte FC made the MLS playoffs this season for the first time in the club's history before they lost in a 5-2 loss to New York Red Bulls.
According to reports, the club is already finalizing the interview process and will be appointing a coach later in December 2023.
Since his second trial at Chelsea after the sack of Graham Potter, Frank Lampard has been out of a job and hopes to secure the Charlotte deal.
The 45-year-old manager, while he was a player at Chelsea and New York FC, attained massive heights.
Despite being successful as a player, he is yet to find his feet as a coach, following his low success rate over the years.
The Englishman however looks fit for the job as he has a close tie with MLS, having ended his career in the league.
Frank Lampard started his coaching career at Derby County in 2018, before accepting a deal with Chelsea and then Everton.
While he was the manager of Derby County, he led them to championship playoffs, where he lost to Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, a competitor for the coaching job, Smith has in the past coached Aston Villa, guiding the club from the Championship into the Premier League after 3 years.
Frank Lampard continues to grow in his managerial craft, but he is yet to fully develop into a big-name manager.
In 2019, the former Chelsea midfielder made his debut as a manager for Chelsea, taking over the helm for the axed Mauricio Sarri.
However, he was fired after Chelsea lost 23 of their 84 games. The greatest loss for a Chelsea manager in their first game since 1978 occurred when the team lost 4-0 against Manchester United on the first day of the 2019/20 Premier League.
After leading Chelsea to the FA Cup final in 2020, following a tight loss on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup earlier that season, Lampard came very close to winning his first title as a manager during his first stint in the Chelsea dugout.
Thomas Tuchel, who went on to win the Champions League with the team in the same season, took his position shortly after.
The former Everton coach will be relishing the prospect of winning a trophy with Charlotte FC if given the managerial role at the club.
Dean Smith, despite his huge success with Aston Villa, could not sustain the pressure of managing Leicester City, as he couldn't keep the team in the top flight.
Charlotte FC are in search of a manager who will help the team progress in the 2024 MLS campaign.
