The nasty incident before the start of the Champions League final versus Real Madrid on Saturday was blamed on 'thousands of ticketless Liverpool fans,' according to French officials.
The police attempted to quell the commotion at the Stade de France, which resulted in a delay in kickoff time.After many Liverpool fans were barred from entering the stadium, kick-off was delayed by 36 minutes.
The English fans, including youngsters, were allegedly subjected to tear gas and pepper spray by French police.
Thousands of British fans without a ticket or with fraudulent tickets forced their way in and, at times, assaulted the stewards,' France's interior minister Gerald Darmanin stated on Twitter.
"Thousands of English supporters' attempts at incursion and fraud have hampered the work of the stewards and police forces, but they will not taint this win," she tweeted.
"Many supporters without tickets for the match or holders of counterfeit tickets blocked entrance to the Stade de France, at the level of the external security perimeter," the Paris police headquarters stated in a statement.
