Quincy Promes was detained in Dubai on Friday, March 1, 2024, after committing a new offense different from his drug trafficking scandal.
Promes' arrest comes about 2 weeks after he was sentenced to six years in prison by a Netherlands court for smuggling more than a ton of cocaine.
Quincy Promes was reported to have been accosted and detained at the airport while his current club, Spartak Moscow, was flying out after training activities.
Based on a report from Yahoo Sports, prosecutors revealed that the Dutchman's recent arrest was for the alleged offense committed in Dubai and not an extradition demanded by Dutch prosecutors.
Speaking with a spokesman for the Public Prosecutor’s Office, he confirmed that the footballer had been arrested but stressed that it wasn't for the “Dutch case”.
He said: “We have verified the media reports about Promes’ arrest. We understand from our contact person there that Promes was arrested for a local offense and not for the Dutch case.
“We will not comment at this time on whether we will request his extradition or not.”
