Kobbie Mainoo may switch from his defensive midfield role for Man United to an attacking midfielder in England senior national team.

The Stockport-born England youth player is being monitored both by England national team manager Gareth Southgate and Ghana national team.

While England are making plans to harness the burgeoning young talent into the Three Lions squad, Ghana FA are also not giving up on their push. Randy Abbey, a Ghana football chief, made it clear Ghana FA are interested in drafting Kobbie Mainoo into the Black Stars squad.

Abbey revealed Mainoo is one of the top young talents the country is hoping to bring to the senior national team as they continue scouring for Ghanaian youngsters abroad to join the team.

"The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams.

"Kobbie is definitely one of these incredible talents and the association would love to work with him and many like him at home and abroad," Abbey said.

As the two FAs slug it out for the commitment of Mainoo, Gareth Southgate has hinted on a possible different role for Mainoo should he draft the 18-year-old into his England squad.

Mainoo plays as a defensive midfielder under ten Hag's deep-press system at Manchester United. Southgate seemed to have disagreed with the Dutch on Mainoo's role. Speaking on the prospects of recruiting the young talent soon, Gareth Southgate insist Kobbie Mainoo could as well be deployed as an attacking midfielder.

The England boss added he doesn't see the player tarrying long on his defensive role.

"He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such.

"He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward."

Since his big break into Manchester United first team, Mainoo has been a regular in Erik ten Hag's Man United squad. He is regarded as player for the future with United ready to offer him a new contract with improved terms soon.
