Gareth Southgate is apparently Sir Jim Ratcliffe's preferred choice to replace Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United in the summer of 2024.

Based on reports from the Daily Star, Ratcliffe is highly confident of snapping up the England boss after his team at INEOS sport discussed with several Manchester United legends.

They claim that Southgate, who has been manager of the Three Lions since 2016, has the support of some of United's current players.

Gareth Southgate is also believed to have the support of the incoming director of football Dan Ashworth.

Southgate and Ashworth worked together at the Football Association and reports indicate they are ready to work together again.

Gareth Southgate's current deal with England expires in December 2024, after the European Championships in Germany.

The English FA are keen on extending it further, however, it is uncertain if Southgate will be keen on continuing with the 1966 FIFA World Cup champions.

If Gareth Southgate is willing to leave his job with England, Sir Jim Ratcliffe will reportedly have to part with about £800,000 in compensation.

Southgate has refused to discuss his future beyond the Euros, but Ratcliffe wants the 53-year-old to lift the lid on his future quickly.

Despite reaching the semi-final of the FA Cup and still within reach of qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League, Sir Jim Ratcliffe isn't convinced that Erik Ten Hag is the man to lead Manchester United forward.

Ten Hag would earn about £10 million in compensation if he is dismissed by the Red Devils before his contract ends in the summer of 2025.

Gareth Southgate has been impressive in handling England, with the team reaching the 2020 European Championships final and the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The INEOS group are keen to get Manchester United in the right direction, having spent £1.3 billion in getting a 27.7% stake at the club.

They have already snapped up Omar Berrada from rivals Manchester City to become the club's new CEO, while Dan Ashworth is closing in on joining the club from Newcastle United to become their director of football.

Ashworth worked as the FA's director of elite development between 2012 and 2018, working with Southgate, during his stint as England's Under-21 gaffer and then senior team manager.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have been inconsistent this campaign, and that has plunged Erik Ten Hag's future at Old Trafford into uncertainty.

The Red Devils have lost 11 league matches this term, and they are 9 points behind 4th-placed Aston Villa.

The Old Trafford giants are also 6 points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who occupy the 4th spot on the log.

It is not yet given that the Premier League will be handed a 5th spot in the expanded 36-team Champions League group stage and as such, Manchester United have to battle hard in the coming games.

Meanwhile, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is aiming to copy the template of Barcelona and Real Madrid by playing in a world-class Old Trafford that should hold up to 100,000 fans.

Ratcliffe wants major England matches and cup finals to be moved away from Wembley and played at Old Trafford.

Based on reports, a task force spearheaded by Lord Coe, which includes Gary Neville and Andy Burnham will look into how feasible the project is and how to regenerate the surrounding area.

Speaking on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast, Ratcliffe shared that he wanted to follow the template of the two Spanish giants - Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Both clubs are redeveloping their Bernabeu and Nou Camp homes currently and they want to make their stadium a magnificent edifice.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: “Manchester United are arguably, I would say, the greatest club in the world, but you'd definitely say one of the top three clubs in the world.

“They are probably the biggest sports brand worldwide. Some of the American brands are quite big but they're not worldwide brands like United.

He added: “If you look at what Real Madrid are doing with the Bernabeu and Barcelona are doing with the Nou Camp."

He expressed that the Santiago Bernabeu is really fabulous, while the Camp Nou is massive and they are doling out massive money in revamping and refurbishing it.

Jim Ratcliffe then came back to touch on the Premier League and said that no stadium in the league “compares with the Bernabeu or the Nou Camp.”

It will be fascinating to see how Ratcliffe goes about these incredible plans and if he will indeed achieve it.
