The Ghanaian National Football Association has sacked Chris Hughton as Ghana national team coach after crashing out of the 2023 AFCON group stage.
The sacking was confirmed by the Ghana Football Association via a statement which reads, "The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect.
"The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.”
"The Ghana Football Association will, in the coming days, provide a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars."
“The Black Stars of Ghana finished in last place in Group B of the 2023 African Cup of Nations after playing a 2-2 draw against Mozambique.”
At the beginning of the Ghana African Cup of Nations campaign, the Black Stars lost to Cape Verde 2-1 on January 14, 2024. Hughton was nearly attacked by an angry fan after the match.
The team then proceeded to play a 2-2 draw against Egypt despite going ahead twice in the game.
Hughton, whose father was a Ghanaian, took over as manager of the Black Stars in February 2023 after Otto Afro stepped down as the manager of the national team.
Hughton was previously serving as the technical director of the team at the FIFA World Cup in 2022 before landing the Ghana national team job as the head coach.
The former Nottingham Forest manager who won three matches in charge of the national team was already under severe pressure going into the 2023 African Cup of Nations after Ghana lost to the Comoros Islands in the World Cup qualifiers in November 2023.
