The Ghanaian National Football Association has sacked Chris Hughton as Ghana national team coach after crashing out of the 2023 AFCON group stage.

The sacking was confirmed by the Ghana Football Association via a statement which reads, "The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect.

"The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.”


"The Ghana Football Association will, in the coming days, provide a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars."

“The Black Stars of Ghana finished in last place in Group B of the 2023 African Cup of Nations after playing a 2-2 draw against Mozambique.”

At the beginning of the Ghana African Cup of Nations campaign, the Black Stars lost to Cape Verde 2-1 on January 14, 2024. Hughton was nearly attacked by an angry fan after the match.

The team then proceeded to play a 2-2 draw against Egypt despite going ahead twice in the game.

Hughton, whose father was a Ghanaian, took over as manager of the Black Stars in February 2023 after Otto Afro stepped down as the manager of the national team.

Hughton was previously serving as the technical director of the team at the FIFA World Cup in 2022 before landing the Ghana national team job as the head coach.

The former Nottingham Forest manager who won three matches in charge of the national team was already under severe pressure going into the 2023 African Cup of Nations after Ghana lost to the Comoros Islands in the World Cup qualifiers in November 2023.

Who is Chris Hughton?
The manager was born on December 11, 1958, in the city of Forest Gate, England. He is currently 65 years old, with a height of 5 feet and 7 inches.

Hughton started his managerial career as the caretaker manager of Tottenham Hotspur in 1997.

He was made a Newcastle permanent manager in 2009 and was sacked in 2010.

On June 11, 2011, the Irish tactician was appointed to manage Championship side Birmingham City.

In October 2011, Birmingham City won four Championship matches and drew one.

Due to that, he was given the title of championship manager of the month. In addition, he guided the Blues to a fourth-place finish in the championship.

He was made manager of Norwich City on June 7, 2012. Hughton lost his first match to Fulham 5-0, but it was followed by two wins against Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as a victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

He was sacked by Norwich City on April 6, 2014. he was subsequently named the manager of Brighton and Nottingham Forest before he left European football.
