Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had called for an increase in the goal post size in football months after he retired from the game.
The former Jueventus goalkeeper gave this suggestion in a latest interview with Tuttosport. Buffon said, "The reason for the demand for an increase in goal post size was due to the human body size."
He proceeded, saying, "I was talking about this with my relatives and my wife the other day. When I started in 1998, I was among the top five tallest players in Serie A, but last year, when I was with Parma in Serie B, I was always among the five tallest, but of the twenty-two on the pitch".
"We could start thinking about it. The size of the goalposts was determined in 1875. They were probably too big for the anthropometric values of that time."
This suggestion will help world-class strikers like Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland, and many more score more goals. However, it is left for the Football Governing Body (FIFA) to consider his suggestion.
In 1863, the English FA determined the goal posts should be eight yards apart (7.32 m). In 1866, the English FA changed how the size of a goal post should be.
The English FA made it an upright post, eight yards apart with a tape across them, eight feet's from the ground.
In 1875, a wooden crossbar was introduced to replace the tape across, with the crossbar being mandatory since it was used in 1875.
