Daniel Hauer Fernandes has been tagged the scorer of the “greatest own goal” in football history after rifling the ball into his own goal in a Bundesliga second-tier derby encounter.

The Portuguese shot-stopper was culpable for the second goal Hamburger SV conceded in the heated clash that put St. Pauli 2-goal ahead with the opening 27 minutes of proceedings.

St Pauli had raced into an early lead in the 15th minute, with Jackson Irvine scoring the opener.

12 minutes later, Daniel Fernandes created arguably the highlight of the game, putting the ball into his net in a shocking manner.

However, Fernandes can thank his teammates, as they fought back through goals from Robert Glatzel and Immanuel Pherai to pick up a point from the derby clash, which ended 2-2.

Several goalkeepers have scored own goals in the past, but how this was done, will continue to be talked about now and again.

Daniel Hauer Fernandes was left dashing to receive a heavy pass from his teammate, as he had to quickly adjust his body to get to the ball.

The 31-year-old then thundered the ball into his goal post mistakenly as he attempted a clearance.

The own goal stunned both sets of supporters, including his teammates, who couldn't believe their eyes.

Fernandes is understood to be one of the best goalkeepers in the German Bundesliga second division, having impressive shot-stopping and ball-distribution abilities.

However, his ball distribution ability seemingly left him for a second, as he blasted the ball into his own goal.

Daniel Fernandes joined Hamburger SV from Darmstadt 98 on July 1, 2019, for a fee of €1.3 million.

The former Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper has made 15 appearances this campaign, keeping 6 clean sheets in the process.

Hamburger SV currently sits 2nd in the German Bundesliga second tier with 28 points, 3 points behind 1st placed St Pauli (31).

Tim Walter's side has conceded 20 goals in the league and scored 30 goals thus far this campaign.

They are aiming to secure promotion back to the German Bundesliga, having last played in the top flight in the 2017/18 season.

Following the bizarre own goal scored by Daniel Fernandes, several reactions ensued across social media, with netizens laughing at the goalie for the error.

One fan reacted that the own goal is possibly the greatest in football history, and the individual termed it a sensational work from Hamburger SV.

Another fan wrote: “Nah! This should be investigated What in the name of playing out from the back is this?”

Another individual further spat the goal, writing: “The goalkeeper was helpless before the terrible shot.”

Hamburger SV return to action against Hertha Berlin on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, a DFB-POKAL encounter, and Fernandes is expected to man the post for his side.
