The members of the House of Representatives have revealed their plan to ban sports betting in the country.

The lawmakers laid this motion during a plenary session in Abuja on Thursday which was presided by Sen. Kelechi Nwogu. The House of Reps has urged the National Lottery Regulation Commission (NLRC) to adhere to the Lottery Regulatory Commission Act of 2005.

Kelechi Nwogu stated that sports betting has led to an increased crime rate and suicide, especially among youths in the country. He further stated that it has a high impact on relationships in society due to debt, stealing from people, etc.

Kelechi urged the Federal Ministry of Information and the Committee on Inter-governmental Affairs to organize a nationwide campaign to enlighten the public about the negative impact of sports betting.

The House of Reps urged both bodies to provide feedback within a month to speed up legislative action.
