Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has broken silence on the N18M personal income tax levy the Lagos State Government instructed her to pay before the end of the year.
Recall that in June 2023, Iyabo Ojo called out the Lagos Inland Revenue Service over the N18M tax levy issued for which she was given a 7-day ultimatum to pay.
Iyabo Ojo has revealed via Instagram that the state government gave her a period of 3 months to pay a sum of N18M before the end of November or go to court.
She said she is aware that the tax levy issued to her is a deliberate attack on her by the government stating that she has been facing serious backlash since she fought for justice for Princess daughter who was sexually molested by the convicted Nollywood actor Baba Ijesha.
She said she decided to follow her heart during the elections and support Peter Obi of Labour Party but she was also tagged "Omo Ale Yoruba" meaning 'illegitimate Yoruba breed'. Iyabo Ojo said she has done everything in her power to reduce the tax levy but her letter was rejected.
She said, "Every effort on my part to reduce it was rejected. Even when I had to forcefully accept it, my payment plan was also rejected. I even had to write an apology letter, yet they refused to give me an easy payment plan. Now tell me if this is not witch hunting, and I'm supposed to stay silent."
Iyabo Ojo said despite facing serious turbulence in her business since 2020, she has been consistent with paying her business tax, loan tax, mortgage tax and all other bills. She said if she had so much money, she wouldn't buy her house on mortgage.
She added, "I'm the breadwinner, over 30 people are depending on me. Dollar is rising almost everyday. Fuel is high, diesel is high, everything is expensive but I was given 3 months to pay over N18M. The money we make, the bills are so overwhelming. Even to save is a problem"
