A footballer from the Indonesian club Persikas Subang tragically died on Saturday afternoon, February 10 after being struck by lightning while playing a friendly match.
According to reports from local media, the 34-year-old athlete was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately could not be saved.
The horrible scene was captured on video as the 34-year-old collapsed at Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung, West Java.
The deceased participated in a friendly football match between FLO FC Bandung and his team, Persik Subang who competed in the third division of Indonesia.
According to reports from local media PRFM news, the man was still alive after the incident and taken to a nearby hospital but sadly passed away shortly after.
The disturbing video of the incident has spread widely on social media, with football fans and players expressing their sympathies.
The shocking and tragic incident also sparked a wave of concern with people calling for better safety measures in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.
One X user commented: “RIP to that player".
Another wrote: '‘This is the stuff of my nightmares. I lived through the “San Francisco earthquake of ’89 that ended Game 3 of the Baseball World Series".
A third replied: "That’s awful and condolences. When I was a referee I always kept an eye on the weather, I think it’s in the FIFA manual. For exactly this reason. Don’t know if that was possible here or if there was a ref. This video will find its way to FIFA and referee associations worldwide."
Meanwhile, this tragic event is the second time that a football player in Indonesia has been struck by lightning.
The previous incident occurred at the 2023 Soeratin U-13 Cup, where a young footballer from Bojonegoro, East Java was struck by lightning.
The player suffered a cardiac arrest and was quickly taken from the field and transferred to Ibnu Sina Hospital in Bojonegoro for medical treatment.
With medical assistance, the young player was successfully resuscitated and regained consciousness after approximately 20 minutes.
In a similar incident in 2023, a 21-year-old Brazilian footballer, Caio Henrique de Lima Goncalves, was struck by lightning while playing for his team, Uniao Jaiirense, in a cup match in the state of Parana.
Despite being rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the field, he was unlucky and tragically passed away.
According to reports, about six other players have also been struck by lightning bolts and had to spend time in the hospital for treatment.
The shocking incident has raised concerns about safety measures during sporting events, especially in open-air stadiums prone to extreme weather conditions.
It would be a good move if the Indonesian football federation could review their safety protocols to prevent such a devastating accident from happening again in the future.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family the deceased left behind.
