INEC declares Kebbi governorship election inconclusive
The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has declared the Kebbi governorship election as “inconclusive”.
The gubernatorial elections held on Saturday, March 18, 2023 and results from different states have been released. The results from the gubernatorial elections in Kebbi state have been deemed inconclusive by INEC.
Professor Yusuf Sa’idu, from Usman Danfodio University in Sokoto State was the one who announced this.
He is the Collation and Returning Officer of the election, and this news was announced at the collation center at the INEC headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.
The elections in Kebbi was majorly between the two major rival parties APC (all Progressives Congress) and PDP (peoples Democratic Party)
Prof Yusuf mentioned that there were cancellations in 20 LGA out of the 21 local government areas of Kebbi State.
This cut across some of the Registration Areas in different polling units.
He said that the aggregate number of PVCs that are collected in these polling units are 91,829 in total.
When they checked the results, APC had a total of 388,258 votes and PDP had a total of 342,980 votes.
He mentioned that the difference they saw was at 45,278
He further mentioned that the only option they had was to refer to page 31 of the electoral Act 2022, section 51, sub section 2 and 3 of the electoral laws for guidance.
The law states that in an election, where the total number of votes casted exceeds the number of accredited voters in that poling unit, the results of that election in that opposing unit should be canceled by the presiding officer.
Professor Yusuf, as the collation and returning officer of the Kebbi State gubernatorial elections then declared the governorship election in Kebbi as inconclusive.
