INEC Office in Imo is Set on fire

Reports have stated that some hoodlums have set one office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on fire. The office affected was the one in Imo State.

It is also known that these people, in addition to setting the office on fire, also kidnapped some construction workers. Fortunately these victims were later rescued.

This incident happened just a few days after another INEC office was set ablaze in Ebonyi State. During this incident in Ebonyi, several materials including electoral materials, including ballot boxes, were all destroyed.

Mr Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, made some comments regarding this issue. He said the incident happened in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

He also said that it was Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, who reported the attack which took place on Thursday, 1st December 2022.

He said that the building which was set ablaze and vandalized was undergoing some renovation. He added that the renovation was an extensive one. It was 3 out of the 7 construction workers who were kidnapped.
He mentioned that the damage wasn't too bad because of the immediate reasons of the Nigerian police. They deployed their officers to the site immediately and it helped minimize the damage.

Finally he added that the attacks were many and they were concerned over the numerous attacks which had taken place. These attacks are coming just months before the general election in 2023.
