Jamie Carragher has maintained his opinion that Lionel Messi is greater than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carragher even shockingly claimed that there was never a debate on who was the greater player between the pair.

The Ronaldo-Messi rivalry has generated enormous debate over the past 2 decades, with fans of both players passionately claiming that the player they support is the greater footballer.

Speaking on CBS Sports, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher weighed in once again on the age-long debate.

Jamie Carragher said: “It was never a debate! Cristiano Ronaldo was nowhere near the level of Lionel Messi.

“Ronaldo is one of the greatest goalscorers of all time, Messi is the greatest in history of all time.

“It’s not even close. Just because Ronaldo scored goals, Messi scored goals and was an unbelievable player. I don’t even think it’s close.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are in the twilight of their respective careers, but their greatness continues to illuminate the world.

Ronaldo currently plays for Saudi Pro League giants Al Nassr, and he has been menacing since joining the club in December 2022.

Ronaldo has scored 32 goals and provided 11 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions for the Knights of Najd.

Cristiano Ronaldo led Al Nassr to the Arab Club Champions Cup in August 2023, and he played an instrumental role in their triumph.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi currently plys his trade with Inter Miami, joining the club in July 2023, following the expiration of his two-year stint with Paris Saint Germain.

Messi has been impressive thus far in Miami, scoring 11 goals and providing 5 assists in 14 appearances.

Additionally, Lionel Messi led the Herons to the Leagues Cup in August 2023, and he was fabulous throughout the tournament.

The rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo peaked during the 2010s, the time when both players were representing Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

The duo have a staggering 13 Ballon d'Or awards between them, with Lionel Messi having 8, while Cristiano Ronaldo has 5.

Despite being in the twilight of their respective careers, the pair continue to produce magical performances.

However, in recent years following the exploits of Messi in winning the FIFA World Cup, many individuals have claimed that the Argentine is now a greater player than Cristiano Ronaldo.

There are also those on the other divide, who counter that notion, indicating that when Ronaldo won the first senior international trophy amongst the duo in 2016, many didn't conclude that he was the greater player.

Cristiano Ronaldo guided Portugal to win the Euro 2016, putting on a passionate on-field and off-field display.

The debate will continue to rage on, and due to the magnificence of the pair, it will be difficult for many to choose a side.

Some claim it's best to respect and value them for their contributions to football whilst they are still active, instead of fuelling an “unnecessary rivalry”.
