Liverpool and Premier League legend Jordan Henderson is not having a smooth run with Eredivisie outfit Ajax after his switch from Al-Etiffaq in Saudi Arabia to the Dutch outfit.
Henderson called it a quit to his £700,000-a-week contract with Steven Gerrard's Al-Etiffaq to return to Europe. He was linked to a Premier League return but ended up settling with Dutch giants Ajax.
After signing for the Eredivisie outfit, Jordan Henderson was made the team captain as a badge of honor for his experience.
Since joining the club, the 33-year-old has made four appearances for Ajax. He last played for the club in a 2-2 draw against NEC Nijmegen.
Against Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Europa Conference League, Henderson was dropped due to a knock. However, he was expected to return to the lineup in the Eredivisie matchup against AZ Alkmaar.
Shockingly, he was dropped from the match as well. According to the Sun, Henderson was axed off the squad against AZ Alkmaar due to a tactical tweak by Ajax manager John van't Schip.
Schip played a back three against AZ Alkmaar instead of a back four with Henderson being a casualty of the tactical change.
Schip's tactical maneuver failed to yield result either as Ajax stumbled to a 2-0 defeat. Henderson will hope to return to the lineup again when Ajax hosts Utrecht in Amsterdam in another Eredivisie cracker on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
Henderson left Al-Etiffaq just a few months into his Al-Etiffaq contract. He was lured to the Saudi outfit by his ex-Liverpool teammate and Al-Etiffaq manager Steven Gerrard.
As per reports, Henderson opted to call a quit to his Al-Etiffaq contract not to risk his place in Gareth Southgate's England national team.
