Since December 2022, more than 700 cases of diphtheria and 80 recorded deaths have been confirmed in eight states in Nigeria including the federal capital.
Yesterday, the Kaduna State Ministry of Health confirmed the first cases of diphtheria disease in Kafanchan Local Government Area in Kaduna State.
This was discovered after some residents of Takau Ward, Kafanchan started to show the same symptoms. After a series of tests and investigations, it was confirmed that it was diphtheria.
Diphtheria is an infection of the nose and throat with symptoms such as sore throat, weakness, difficulty in breathing, swollen neck and fever. It is an airborne disease. That is, it can be spread through coughs and sneezes.
The Kaduna State government urged the public to take preventive measures to stop the disease from spreading. They are expected to avoid contact with sick people.
They should also ensure to sanitize their hands and clean their environment regularly.They are also expected to report any suspected cases of diphtheria in their residential areas.
The Kaduna government also commended the Ministry of Health for their swift response to the emergency and urged them to continue their duty in ensuring that the disease is eradicated.
