Lagos hospital shut down over unscreened blood

A hospital in Lagos state has been shut down over a case of unscreened blood. The hospital is a private hospital and its located at Ago-Okota in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area in Lagos state. It was the Lagos State Government who shut down this hospital because they allegedly collected and transfused unscreened blood. The blood was unscreened and unlabelled and they were transfusing it to patients who didn't know a thing.

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, Dr Bodunrin Osikomaiya was the one who revealed this in a recent statement which was signed by Mr Tunbosun Ogunbanwo who is the Director of Public Affairs of the Lagos state Ministry of Health. This statement was released on Sunday in Lagos state.

He stated that the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS) alongside the state Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency have sealed the hospital facility. This was after they received a tip-off a resident who was concerned.

She stated that after they received the tip-off, they carried out a thorough investigation into the matter. After this was done, the enforcement teams of both LSBTS and HEFAMAA went to the hospital facility and were able to confirm what was actually happening. They visited visited hospital during a joint monitoring exercise in the area the faculty is located.

According to her, the medical practices been carried out by the hospital management were unwholesome, unprofessional and unethical. They then shut down the facility because they have been putting the lives of their patients at risk by transfusing unscreened and unlabelled blood.

In her words “The law states that no person within Lagos State shall transfuse blood into a patient unless such blood has been screened, tested, labelled by the state blood transfusion committee, and found to be negative for all transmissible diseases including HIV I and II, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and any other disease as may be deemed necessary by LSBTS,”

She also mentioned that they have gotten the details of the blood donors and also those who have received the blood. They got these details from the hospital management. Hey are trying to locate the people who have received this blood from the hospital to check their health.
She then aduced hospitals and health workers to abide to the regulations which have been given by the World Health Organisation’s regarding blood donation, collection and transfusion.
