Yesterday, the Lagos State Government released a statement denying the approval of mass burial to be conducted for ENDSARS victims.
October 2020 is a day to never forget in the history of Nigeria. The series of peaceful protests which came as a result of police brutality and profiling by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) led to young Nigerians fighting for their lives.
Months later, the Lagos State Government announced that there were no casualties on the night of the incident. Though a Nigerian celebrity DJ Switch who was at the Lekki Tollgate that night made a live video showing it in real time the true situation.
It was earlier reported that the LASG approved the mass burial of 103 bodies which were recovered during the ENDSARS protests in October 2020. This was confirmed by the Lagos State Ministry of Health on Sunday in a leaked letter which was dated 19th July 2023.
The letter which was from the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency was signed and a sum of N61,285,000 was approved for the mass burial.
However, the Lagos State Ministry of Health denied the approval in a statement describing it as a setup against the government.
The statement which was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos Ministry of Health read:
"The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to some social media publications about a purported mass burial plan for casualties of the 2020 #EndSARS incident. Peddlers of the news are deliberately misinterpreting and sensationalising a letter from the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency titled: Letter of No Objection – Mass Burial for the 103, the Year 2020 ENDSARS victims, to misinform the public, stir public sentiment and cause public disaffection against the Lagos State Government."
It was also stated in the letter that the mass burial is for the bodies that were recovered during the aftermath of ENDSARS violence and community clashes in several areas in Lagos State.
"For the records, the Lagos State Environmental Health Unit picked up bodies in the aftermath of #EndSARS violence and community clashes at Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo and Ajah areas of Lagos State."
