The Lagos State government has placed a ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam packs also known as 'takeaways' with immediate effect.

This was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. This decision was influenced by the harmful effects the single-use plastics and Styrofoam packs were having on the ecosystem.

Despite the rigorous cleaning of the drainage channels regularly across the state, most of them were blocked by these takeaway packs due to unhealthy distribution and disposal. Also, the streets of Lagos are always littered with these Styrofoam packs, and the environmental agency, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) struggles with this every day.

The LASG has directed the LAWMA and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) to take necessary measures and halt the production of the packs in respective companies. The State also urged the producers, distributors, and users of the Styrofoam packs to strictly adhere to instructions or face penalty.
