Lagos was not founded by the Binis, Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, corrects Oba of Benin
Abisoye Oshodi, the Balogun of Eko land, respectfully corrected the Oba of Benin over his most recent claim. A while ago, the Oba of Benin went viral for saying that the Binis were the ones who founded certain areas in Lagos. Abisoye then disagreed and said that statement was incorrect.
He said that the Benin ancestors had migrated and settled on a small island that was called Eko. This was before Lagos itself was founded. Also, other tribes were residing on the island before the Binis migrated. After the Benin ancestors arrived, they forcefully imposed a taxation system on the people of Eko who were traders in the land. The tribes that were inhabitants of Eko before the arrival of the Binis were the Aworis, Itsheris, Olofins, etc. Therefore, claiming that the ancestors of Benin founded Lagos is untrue.
According to Abisoye, that small Island that was previously referred to as Eko is now known as Isale-Eko. That was where the Benin ancestors settled after they migrated from their town, not the entirety of Lagos State. He urged the Oba of Benin to visit Lagos and take a tour around Isale-Eko anytime he wished.
