Lautaro Martinez has broken 72-years-old Serie A record following Inter Milan's victory over Salernitana on Friday, February 16.
What happened?
The Argentine frontman was on target as Inter Milan trashed Salernitana 4-0 to retain their top spot in the race for the Serie A title.
The San Siro outfit grabbed the lead in the 17th minute courtesy of Thuram's powerful strike from the center of the box off Carlos Augusto's cross.
Serie A top scorer Martinez doubled the lead just two minutes later as he scored his 20th league goal of the season, clutching an excellent long-range shot from Augusto's second assist of the match.
The Argentina forward has now set a record as the third Inter Milan player, after Giuseppe Meazza and Stefano Nyers, to score at least 20 goals in three consecutive Serie A seasons.
Adding to his tally means he has become the eighth all-time top scorer in the history of Inter with 125 goals, surpassing Mauro Icardi.
However, Lautaro Martinez is only the third Inter player to score at least 20 goals in three consecutive top-flight campaigns in 72 years.
He follows in the footsteps of Giuseppe Meazza, who did it five times from 1929-30 to 1933-34, and Stefano Nyers in four seasons in a row from 1948-49 to 1951-52.
The speed at which he has reached this milestone is also tremendous, as in the last 60 years the only Inter striker to have scored 20 goals in his first 23 games of the season was Christian Vieri.
Speaking after the game against Salernitana, Martinez said; "We approach every game the same way, sometimes it works from the start and sometimes it gets tougher, but we always try to press high, recover the ball quickly, and score lots of goals".
"Absolutely, I experienced lifting the Supercoppa in Riyadh and that is a moment I will always hold with me. Now we have an important objective ahead of us, we must remain humble, working every day and playing the way we did against Salernitana".
He added; "We always have our destiny in our hands. During the experience with this coach, we worked so hard on gaining maturity, and now we step onto the field aware of our own strength, eager to show it in every game".
Inter Milan are now 10 points clear of Juventus at the top of the Serie A table and 11 points away from neighbor AC Milan, with all of them having played 24 matches.
Inter Milan vs Salernitana in brief
League leaders Inter Milan lived up to their name as they sailed to a 4-0 home triumph over bottom-placed Salernitana on Friday, February 16 to bolster their grasp on top of Serie A standings.
Goals from Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martínez, Denzel Dumfries, and Marko Arnautovic sealed the win that lifted Simone Inzaghi's side to 63 points, 10 clear of second-placed Juventus, who were shocked by Udinese on Monday, February 13.
The hosts made an electric start, creating chance after chance as Marcus Thuram and Nicolo Barella both hit the woodwork within the opening seven minutes.
Inter were simply brilliant, dominating from start to finish, creating chance after chance but for some excellent goalkeeping, they would have won by a narrow scoreline.
What's next?
The Serie A league leaders will remain focused on their excellent run in form as they will shift attention to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg tie coming up against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, February 20.
