This news broke out on Monday afternoon, when one of the aides to president Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie announced on her instagram page that lifestyle audit is now legal in Nigeria.

Lifestyle audit is a check and balance between people’s lifestyle and their income, if their income can foot their corresponding lifestyle. Of recent, some Nigerian youths are known to flaunt their expensive lifestyle on social, yet with no known source of income.

This was the case of Hushpuppi in Dubai, who was closely monitored by the Dubai and American government for some time, before he was eventually arrested. Though, he claimed to be into real estate, but the Dubai police found traces of fraud associated to him and he was extradited to America.

This comes as one of the weapons of war by the Buhari-led Nigerian government to wage war against corruption. Any anti-graft agency can prosecute a citizen whose source of income is unknown or does not match up with his lifestyle.

This brings fear to many Nigerian youths, as most of them have been showing their displeasure at this new development. Some thinks it is unconstitutional, but according to Tolu Ogunlesi, another presidential aide, who tweeted,

“WILT: Nigerian Courts (up to the Supreme Court) have ruled that it’s not a violation of your constitutional rights to be asked (by anti-corruption agencies) to explain a lifestyle that appears to be beyond your income. Aka lifestyle audit”.

We hope this is not another policy that will be reversed in few months back, as the Nigerian government have been known for, in the past year to wake up to a new policy and after several backlash from her citizens, is being reversed.
