Lionel Messi finally won the World Cup on the twilights of his heroic career. Argentina were among top favorites to win the 2022 World Cup. They went into the tournament on the back of a 36-match unbeaten run but suffered a shock opening defeat to tournamnent minnows Saudi Arabia.

The loss to Saudi Arabia nearly bent the narrative on Argentina's title chances but Lionel Messi came out to give his word that they will bounce back.

The South American giants actually bounced back, winning their remaining two group matches. They comfortably dispatched all their knockout round opponents to set up an epic World Cup final clash with defending champions France.

Messi starred for the Albiceleste with a brace to give Argentina the lead twice but his then PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe mobbed up the latter's challenge, scoring a hat-trick to level the score.

The game ended on a pulsating 3-3 draw after extra time before Argentina came out top on penalties to win the trophy.

2022 World Cup triumph was a significant milestone in Lionel Messi's heroic career. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with South American and world football greats like Diego Maradona and Pele, Lionel Messi needed to add the World Cup trophy to his shelf to affirm his status as world football icon.

And he did in style. It has been one year since Lionel Messi won the World Cup trophy for Argentina. With the memories of the big moment still green in the mind of the Inter Miami forward, he has taken to his social media handle to celebrate one year anniversary of the epic victory.

Messi shared several footage of him, and his teammates with the World Cup trophy after the victory on Instagram and wrote;

"1 year of the most beautiful madness of my life. Unforgettable memories that will last for a lifetime. Happy anniversary to all."

Before the 2022 World Cup, Messi hinted of him possibly retiring from international football but after winning the trophy, he confirmed he will continue playing.

He has been active with Argentina national team in 2026 World Cup qualifiers but it is still unclear whether he will play in the next World Cup or not.
