Liverpool are reportedly in talks with ex-Liverpoo star and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to replace soon-to-leave Jurgen Klopp as Reds new manager.
A number of names have emerged as possible successors to Jurgen Klopp but Xabi Alonso remains a more likely candidate to replace the German tactician in the Reds dugout as new manager.
According to Foot Mercato, Liverpool contacted Alonso back in November 2023 when Jurgen Klopp informed them he will step down as the club's manager before publicly announcing the decision in January.
The move for Xabi Alonso as a possible replacement for Jurgen Klopp is not a surprise. Despite being on the nascent stages of his career as a football manager, Xabi Alonso has been a revelation since taking over Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen last summer. He led the team from the drop zone to the 6th on the Bundesliga table, securing a ticket for European football. This season, Bayer Leverkusen are one of the standout clubs in Europe. They are yet to taste defeat under the watch of Xabi Alonso and are leading the Bundesliga title race with 2 points ahead of challengers and serial winners Bayern Munich.
They are the only team in Europe's top five leagues that is yet to taste defeat. With his standout campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso is a clear favorite to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
However, he is still contracted to Bayer Leverkusen till 2025 and has reportedly joined the team's squad planning ahead of next season.
He is expected to stay put with the Bundesliga outfit next season but a move to Anfield is not ruled out.
Xabi Alonso's Liverpool move will be striking as well as nostalgic for most Liverpool fans. Alonso was part of one of the most successful eras in Liverpool's history, playing for the club as a midfielder. He made 210 appearances for the club from 2004 to 2009, including winning the 2005 Champions League with the team.
Other names that have been linked to the Liverpool job include Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton, Julian Nagelsmann of Germany, and Rubin Amorim of Sporting Lisbon.
Jurgen Klopp announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season in an interview with Liverpool website. The 56-year-old admitted he is running out of energy to continue, hence the decision to step down.
The search has been on for his successor with the aforementioned names topping the list.
