A medical doctor at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital slumped and died after a 72 hour shift at the hospital recently. This doctor has been identified as Umoh Michael. He passed away after performing a 72-hour marathon surgery at the neurosurgery unit
It was the Association of Resident Doctors who presented a protest letter to the chief medical director on Tuesday to expressed their concerns dn sadness over the death of their colleague. In the letter the doctors went ahead to accuse the senior doctors of bully and not providing adequate utilities.
The revealed that the doctor passed away after he had a 72hrs shift in the Neurosurgery Unit on the 17th of September, 2023.
They stated “Dr Michael was on a 72hrs call before arriving home on Sunday morning at 3am to get set for church service, reaching his worship center (United Evangelical Church) where he slumped in the church at about 11am. His roommate attested that Umoh Michael barely slept over the past one week in their apartment as he was always on call"
The management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital has also denied the allegation that were brought forward about the doctor working a 72 hour shift. The management claimed the deceased didn't have a 72 hour shift.
It was the Chief Medical Director of the federal teaching hospital, Prof Lanre Adeyemo, who revealed that this narrative is wrong. They said that the information of this doctor working forb3 days is a lie saying the doctor wasn't even at work on Saturday or the Saturdays he passed away.
In his words “It is unfortunate the young man died. He didn’t die in the hospital, he died outside the hospital but the narrative of 72 hours is not true but you know we can’t be talking about that when someone just died. I just had a meeting with the head of Department and Neurosurgery Unit, the evidence provided to me didn’t show that. How they got the narrative of the 72 hours; honestly, I don’t know. Those who pushed out the narrative for whatever reason have realised it’s an error on their part. They family is grieving, the hospital is grieving.”
