Lyon have fired head coach Fabio Grosso after just seven matches, making it the shortest tenure of any manager in the history of the Gones men's team.

The 46-year-old Italian coach leaves Lyon at the bottom of the table with only one win in seven Ligue 1 matches.

Grosso was appointed in mid-September to replace Laurent Blanc, who was dismissed after a 4-1 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Italian had signed a season-long contract with the option to extend until the summer of 2025, returning to where he had played as a player from 2007 to 2009.

The former left-back had previously managed Bari, Hellas Verona, Brescia, Sion, and Frosinone, leaving the latter team at the end of the 2022-23 season after leading them to Serie A by winning the Serie B title.

Meanwhile, Grosso managed to lead Lyon to their first and only win of the 2023-24 season so far, with a surprising 1-0 away victory against Rennes on November 12.

However, the 46-year-old only managed to secure two points from his first five matches in charge.

Lyon returned to losing form with a 2-0 home defeat against Lille, leaving the seven-time Ligue 1 champions at the bottom of the division with just seven points and nine goals scored.

Following his incompetence, Lyon have announced the dismissal of Grosso and his coaching team, stating in a released statement on Thursday, November 30.

The club wrote: "Considering the team's current ranking of 18th in Ligue 1, and the results achieved, Olympique Lyonnais has decided to initiate a procedure that could result in the termination of Fabio Grosso, as well as his assistants, Raffaelle Longo, Francesco Vaccariello, Vittorio Carello, and Mauro Carretta's employment contracts."

"Olympique Lyonnais expresses gratitude to Fabio Grosso and his assistants for their dedication and professionalism
during their tenure with the professional team."

Grosso's time as Lyon's head coach, which lasted only seven games, is the shortest in the club's history, surpassing Sylvinho's 11-game tenure in 2019.

He has also tied the unfortunate records of Marcelino (Marseille) and Guy Roux (Lens) for the briefest stay of any Ligue 1 manager.

Adding to Grosso's misfortune, he and his assistant Raffaele Longo were injured in an attack on the Lyon team bus as they traveled to the Orange Velodrome for a match against Marseille on October 29.

As a result of the incident, the match was postponed until December 6.

Both Grosso and Longo sustained facial injuries from the projectiles and required hospital treatment, with Grosso left with a bandage above his eye.

What's next?

Lyon, who were last crowned champions in 2007-08, announced that Frenchman Pierre Sage will be taking over as manager temporarily.

The Academy manager Pierre Sage will be in charge of Saturday's match against Lens while the club looks for a permanent replacement.

Candidates believed to be on Lyon's shortlist include Igor Tudor, Jorge Sampaoli, and Bruno Genesio, who recently left Rennes.
