It was the last dance between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, and it came at the most crucial moment in the Premier League title race.

The pair were separated by just a point on the table with the winner set to overtake Arsenal at the summit of the table.

It was a tricky affair for both teams. Liverpool have managed only one win in their last eight Premier League games against Manchester City, drawing four, and losing three.

However, Anfield was a fortress as they had lost only one of their last 20 games, winning 13, and drawing 6.

It was a rickety start for Liverpool with Manchester City gaining momentum in the first three minutes. Phil Foden made a dangerous advance into the Liverpool area but was won off the ball by Virgil van Dijk. Julian Alvarez also had a chance firing Silva's cross on goal but the ball was gathered by Kelleher.

Liverpool came close to their first big chance in the 14th minute. Conor Bradley had fired a cross across the goal-mouth but Darwin Nunez was not far enough to slide it into the back of the net.

Five minutes after the miss, Liverpool had the ball in the back of the net after Luis Diaz slotted home Darwin Nunez's cross into an empty net.

The Anfield crowd went bonkers but the jubilations were shortlived. Darwin could not time his run to beat the offside flag. The linesman lifted the flag and the goal was chalked off.

Against Liverpool's serial threats, Manchester City roared into the lead in the 23rd minute after a perfectly taken set-piece by Kevin De Bruyne which was finished by John Stones, who scored his first goal of the season.

Liverpool had three big chances to draw the game level before the break but failed to make it count as they trailed 1-0 at the break.

Liverpool got off the mark in the second half. Two minutes into the second 45, the Reds were in for an equaliser paving the way for an intriguing encounter. The goal emanated from a mistake back pass by Ake to Ederson which was intercepted by Nunez. Nunez was brought down in the box by Ederson and a spot kick was given to the hosts. Mac Allister converted it to level the scores.

It was still 1-1 at the half-hour but Liverpool were banging on the door, pressing City to their half and looking for a second goal.

Against the run of play in the 73rd minute, Phil Foden crashes the crossbar in a near-miss that would have turned the game around.

It was a lone attempt amidst Liverpool's dominant and searing presence in the game.

The final 10 minutes of the game with as nervy with Liverpool pushing to take the lead. It ended 1-1 at the final whistle with both sides sharing spoils to keep the Premier League title race on the balance.
