The men of the fire service who had retrieved the body had revealed that they got a call on Saturday from someone in the area reporting that a man had drowned in the abandoned pond. They had gotten the call around 6.24am on Saturday.
They suspected that he had accidentally slipped into the pond while gathering some herbs around the area. The pond had been covered by some overgrown grasses and this could have been what led to this accident.
It was the Head of Media and Publicity, Ilorin Fire Service, who is Mr Hakeem Adekunle that revaled this. He mentioned this in a statement which was released recently.
He stated “The firefighters conducted a rescue operation and tragically discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified man, approximately 43 years of age, in an abandoned fish pond. It is believed that the cause of this unfortunate incident was the man accidentally slipping into the pond, which was concealed by overgrown grasses. He was near the pond, attempting to gather herbal leaves when the accident occurred.”
