Manchester United and Bayern Munich have no interest in an adjusted European Super League plans as they pledged their commitment to UEFA and their domestic league.
Man United were one of the founding members of the collapsed European Super League that failed in 2021, and the club's American owners asked forgiveness from fans over their involvement in the breakaway competition.
However, the ESL project received fresh breath after the European Court of Justice assumed that FIFA and UEFA worked against the competition law when obstructing the formation of the league in 2021.
In April 2021, Manchester United alongside the other Premier League big six had publicly vowed to join the Super League.
But their supporters and those of other Premier League big clubs frowned upon the project and decided to organize massive protests during the COVID-19 pandemic. That led to seeing most of the league's primary founders backing out of the plan but only Real Madrid, Juventus, and FC Barcelona remain committed to the new breakaway league.
Meanwhile, Juventus then withdrew from the project in early July 2023.
The new plan would involve 64 men's teams making up three divisions, and 32 women's teams in two divisions. Unlike the original proposals, there would be promotion and relegation.
Following the new plan, Manchester United have declared that this time, they will play no part in attempting to break away from UEFA and published a statement on Thursday, December 21 saying that their stance had not changed regarding not being a part of a European Super League.
The statement read; "We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions, and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game".
At first, Bayern Munich were not interested in the primary plan of the breakaway competition and reaffirmed their disagreement over it.
Jan Christian Dreesen, Bayern's CEO said; "We have taken note of the judgment of the European Court of Justice".
"However, this does not change FC Bayern's and the ECA's position that such a competition would be an attack on the importance of the national leagues and the structure of European football".
He added; "The Bundesliga is the foundation of FC Bayern, just as all national leagues are the foundation of other European football clubs. It is therefore our duty and our deep conviction to strengthen them, not to weaken them."
The club also reaffirmed its commitment to the UEFA project and the Champions League.
Other European clubs sides including Sevilla, Roma, and Atletico have also made public statements denouncing the project.
Only Real Madrid and Barcelona remain committed to the European Super League at the time of writing, with the clubs never withdrawing from the original 2021 project.
However, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has declared that he would not try to stop the Super League project.
He said; "We will not try to stop them. They can create whatever they want".
"I hope they start their top competition as soon as possible… with two clubs".
He added; "Football is not for sale".
What's next?
Following the Court's permission for the European Super League to be formed, it remains to be seen whether or not the project will progress shortly.
