Manchester City were aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table when they faced Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.

Everton starting XI: Pickford, Patterson, Mina, Holgate, Tarkowski, Doucouré, Gueye, Garner, Iwobi, McNeil and Calvert-Lewin.

Man City starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Laporte, Akanji, Dias, Foden, Álvarez, Rodri, Gundogan, Mahrez and Haaland.

An Ilkay Gundogan masterclass propelled Manchester City to a 3-0 victory over Everton.

The German midfielder scored both goals in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium.

The first half was a nervy encounter for the visitors before a glorious goal from Gundogan was followed by Erling Haaland's strike, and a curling free-kick early in the second half was the icing on the cake.

The Everton fans were in full voice early on as Sean Dyche's side pressed high and created some uncomfortable moments on the break for City's back line, although they were still giving the visitors nearly 80% possession of the ball in the first 15 minutes.

It took the 27-minute mark for the first action of the game to arrive but it was not a moment to remember as Riyad Mahrez's drive from long range rose high and wide into the stands, the kind of chance Everton were clearly happy to give their title-hunting opposition.

Seven minutes later, Mason Holgate miscued the first real opportunity.

James Tarkowski headed down from a corner but his fellow defender had to stretch to try and turn the ball goalwards and couldn't control his effort on goal.

Injecting the quality this game needed, Gundogan opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a moment of sheer magic.

Controlling a cross with his back to the goal, the midfielder flicked the ball backward and beyond Jordan Pickford with a real moment of magic.

Before fans could bat an eyelid, it was 2-0. Haaland, who had only managed a handful of touches beforehand, headed home a Gundogan cross just seconds later to give City breathing space which their performance probably did not merit in the first half.

Another scintillating highlight from Gundogan kicked off the second half with a bang. His curling free-kick from the edge of the box fizzed past Jordan Pickford and killed off any hope of an Everton comeback.

Everton did spark into life after the third goal and nearly found a route back into the game after the hour mark when Tarkowski's header hit the post moments before Yerry Mina headed wide himself.

In truth, any optimism had been dashed as the traveling City fans grew louder and louder, brimming and celebrating their aspiring champions as they played out the victory.

That's now 11 Premier League wins in a row for Guardiola's men.

Now their focus turns to the semi-final second leg of the Champions League against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Everton stay just one point adrift of the drop zone, they travel to Wolves next weekend.
