World Cup-winning French midfielder Paul Pogba will leave Manchester United at the end of June, the club announced on Wednesday, ending a largely disappointing second spell at the club, If the 29-year-old leaves at the end of his contract, United will not get back any of the record £89m ($112m) they paid Juventus for him in 2016.
United's new manager Erik ten Hag has made that clear that Pogba's phase at the club is over. Pogba's return to Juventus, where he won four Serie A titles, could be at stake, according to Italian media reports who have given a verbal pledge to return and accepted a lower salary.
Paris SaintGermain, the French champions, have also been mentioned as a possible target as they need a facelift and have been built around World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe.
Ten Hag are looking to revive a team that has seen city rivals Manchester City transform into the powerhouse it once was under Alex Ferguson. United have rarely threatened to relive those days since retiring in 2013.
Watch Pogba's highlights at Manchester United:
Pogba stood out under José Mourinho, who also brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku, and was a key member of the teams that won the League Cup and Europa League in 2017. His subsequent performances have rarely been as good as those he represented France during the 2018 World Cup, showing Rome in the round of 16.
However, he went virtually unnoticed in the final as United lost to Villarreal on penalties. Last season, health problems limited him to 27 appearances in an unimpressive campaign for player and club alike, and United had to settle for a Europa League place.
When he was substituted in a win against Norwich in April, fans were fed up with his inconsistent performances and booed him off.
"Manchester United can confirm that Paul Pogba will leave the club at the end of June when his contract expires, the club said in a statement. In April 2022, his 233 appearances for United ended in a 10th minute defeat at Anfield." The statement explained.
