Mauricio Pochettino has brushed aside talks of penalty calls not going the way of his side as a reason for their embarrassing defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

The Blues were smashed by Jurgen Klopp's side 4-1, courtesy of goals from Diogo Jota, Conor Bradley, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Luis Diaz.

The scoreline could have been more horrible if Darwin Nunez had converted a penalty in the 2nd minute of additional time in the first 45. Chelsea's solitary goal in the clash was scored by Christopher Nkunku.

Following the massive encounter, Pochettino admitted to Liverpool being the better team over his side and the Argentine tactician insisted that he doesn't want to talk about the penalty decisions.

Mauricio Pochettino said: “It's not a final excuse [penalties]. They deserved to win. They were better than us.

“But to talk about this, I don't want to talk about that because it's part of football. They were better than us from the first action…”

Both clubs shared the spoils in the reverse fixture played in August 2023, with both sides settling for a stalemate courtesy of goals from Axel Disasi and Luis Diaz for Liverpool.

Chelsea appeared to be getting back to form in the league before that fixture in Merseyside, however, they were brought down to earth by Jurgen Klopp's fiery side.

The Blues were on a run of 3 league games unbeaten, with the players seemingly settling into the rhythm of Pochettino.

Meanwhile, Chelsea also face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, February 25, 2024, and Mauricio Pochettino appears to be taking lessons from this defeat.

The former Paris Saint Germain boss hopes that his side can learn a thing or two from this clash, with him stressing the need for his players to be “more aggressive”.

The 51-year-old said: “Massive game [the Carabao Cup final], we can learn a lot and approach the game in a different way.

“We need to be more aggressive and address them with the same energy. Today they were much better than us.”

Liverpool have been remarkable this term despite also missing several key players for most matches this season, with the Reds sitting at the summit of the table, with 51 points from 22 matches.

Anyway, Chelsea return to action on Sunday, February 4, 2024, facing Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Matchday 23 Premier League action and they will be hoping to return to winning ways.

The Blues still have a lengthy list of players unavailable for action due to injury, notably; Lesley Ugochukwu, Levi Cowill, Marc Cucurella, Reece James, Robert Sanchez, Romeo Lavia, Trevoh Chalobah, and Wesley Fofana.

Mauricio Pochettino's side sit 10th on the Premier League table, with 31 points from 22 league matches.
